A very interesting and curious subject is that Caraka samhita was really not the work of Caraka but of Agnivesa. Caraka was a redactor of the work. But after his redaction, the name of the book changed to Caraka samhita which is the best evidence for his genius because no other redactor can make any book on which they work in to their name. This is what we are searching now. The word meaning of Caraka is a ‘wandering scholar’ or ‘wandering physician’ (Sanskrit word). It’s clear that he was an eminent scholar of medical science. He was a follower of the Vaiseshika philosophy too. From his articles and style of writing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a Boudhic influence over his mind was also clear. He was thorough in medical science and ‘nonsurgical methods’ of Ayurvedic treatments. Moreover he was a philosopher with vast and deep knowledge. (And he was a disciple of Aatreya,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the great monk who got the knowledge of medicine and health from the god).
These reasons compelled us to reach at a decision that Caraka was an ‘ascetic’ or ‘monk’. But here comes a contradiction that the ascetics were generally considered to be those,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who have divine knowledge whom sacrifices themselves for a noble cause. They were totally free from ‘mundane deeds’. They remain in this world for to attain the ultimate goal or salvation. They live as a perfect, ideal specimen for the common people and thus to get followers from them. But according to Caraka,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], most of these facts will not agree with, i.e. he always advised the people to conserve health; to enjoy the life, instructed them to use even non-vegetarian foodstuffs according to the seasons,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], explained about the benefits and harms of sexual relations and best and worst time for sexual intercourse etc. which are to be avoided by the noble men even from their thoughts. So it can be said that he was hardly a monk but a scholar who knew many branches of knowledge including medical science,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], philosophy, grammar etc...
In the later centuries many doctors in the name Caraka emerged in the society because the eminent physicians were called by the name of Caraka, the great physician as a way of compliment. i.e.,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the former Caraka was honored in the society and that is why he was given importance even years and years after his death. Many historians comment that he was the doctor of the royal dynasty- Maurya,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the clarification need more evidences. (The Maurya dynasty doctors were traditionally called as Caraka.) Anyhow it is well presumed that the Caraka whom we are dealing with belonged to an upper class of society from the respect and acceptance he gained in his time.
More details about the great man are still behind the curtain. The internal evidences from his book paved the way only to the academic as well as knowledge part of him. As we described earlier, many interpretations and inferences can be formulated on accessing the available data but none can be agreed fully because of the absence of pertinent reasons. But the remarkable fact is that Caraka is still described and inquired on the basis of the comprehensive medical text- ‘Caraka Samhita’ i.e. the greatness is on account of his antecedence in the medical field. So we can also salute the great; who recasted an entire material changing its shape and form altogether and thus deserve the position of naming one of the fundamental treaties of Ayurveda. Yes, the best prostration ever for the ‘aacharya’ who remained for two millennia and still is glowing as the source of knowledge of medicine for the followers…

ELEMENTS AND OVERVIEW
Who are you? Of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you are Spirit - eternal, infinite, and universal. When Spirit enters a body, the energy becomes denser as it binds itself to earth plane. The Energy of Spirit appears as streams of consciousness. The ancients called them ETHER, AIR, FIRE, WATER, and EARTH. One or more of these streams (elements) dominate in us today.
ETHER is the prime element latent in all things, providing space and balance for all elements to unfold. Ether is essential to our sense of connectedness with spirit and wellbeing. In the body, ether is space, particularly in the chest and joints. Out of balance, we have problems with our breathing, joint pain, and difficulties expressing ourselves. Balanced ether promotes our sense of joy and union. Lack of ether is connected with the feeling of grief and separateness.
POLARITY EXERCISES: A few basic exercises, done daily for 2-3 minutes without stress or strain can balance the elements. Check with your medical advisor prior to beginning any new exercise program.
The SQUAT (All elements): Bend your knees and squat down, with elbows at knees and hands holding the bottom of your feet. Gently rock while in this position. Note that this is an “eastern” squat – your knees must remain behind your toes, with your buttocks close to the floor during this exercise. Dot not strain. Place a book under your heels to make this easier)
CLIFFHANGER (Ether and Air): Stand, place the heels of your hands on a firm table behind you, and slide your bottom straight down, bending your knees and keeping your elbows close together.
PUNCHING (Fire): Stand, both hands in a fist, take a breath and push your right hand our forcibly while shouting “HA”. Breathe in while punching left hand out.
SISSORS KICK (Water): Lay on your stomach, bend your knees, and swing your lower legs back and forth across each other.
CEREBRAL SPINAL BOUNCE (Earth): Stand, feet apart, hands on thighs, arms straight. Bend knees and gently “bounce” body in rhythmical movement.
Listen to your own body and do the exercises within your comfort zone.
EARTH is dense, passive, the great provider. It has permanency and stability. Earth is associated with the north, winter, and material affairs. Earth signs include: Taurus (neck); Virgo (bowels); and Capricorn (knees). Balanced earth reflects in strong bones, active assimilation and elimination, and flexible necks. When unbalanced, fear takes over and we experience neck stiffness, constipation and weak bones (osteoporosis). Balanced we find courage and contentment.
SOUNDS: Each element is associated with a particular chakra (spinning wheel of energy) located at different regions of the body. Chakra sounds can balance the elements. Say or sing the following sounds aloud, repeating each 3 times. Sing “HAM” to expand Ether in the throat. Feel Air moving in the chest while singing “YAM”. Feel “RAM”, the sound of fire, in the solar plexus; water, ”VAM“ in the pelvic area; and “LAM”, earth, deep at the base of the spine. When feeling out of balance, repeat the sound that sooths your mind/body state. Water and earth calm air and fire. Use VAM or LAM when under stressful activity to calm down. When feeling low and lethargic, energize yourself by singing RAM or YAM.
POLARITY REFLEXES: The energy of the elements run through our fingers and toes. By holding and massaging a particular finger or toe, we can balance individual currents and flows within the entire body. Ether (o) thumb and big toe. Air (-) index finger and second toe. Fire (+) middle finger and third toe. Water (-) ring finger and fourth toe. Earth (+) little finger and toe. Reflect on the common use of the fire finger for anger and the ring finger for love and you will see their connection with the elements.

If you’ve been to a place before you can prepare for the circumstances you will find there. If you were going to Paris for example, you’d need French francs and some French phrases.
